Some years ago, when the Elvis Presley postage stamp was about to appear, letter writers were asked to vote on the image of Elvis they preferred for the stamp: "early" Elvis or "late" Elvis? For me the answer was obvious. Late, late, and the later the better!
It doesn't get much later than this clip [ed.: which?] from one of Elvis' final concerts. As the author of Alice in Wonderland wrote: "When history becomes a blur/And time becomes a whiz,/If that is not sensation/I don't know what it is." The same can be said of poetry — and this is poetry. This is Samson Agonistes. Blind. Groping. But still strong.
By the way, no one understood and loved Elvis more than Andy Kaufman. In fact, in some of his imitations Andy not only morphed into Elvis but actually improved upon the original. Andy was an extremely sensitive person, as he reveals in another video that I will post later.
