Restored Footage of Ohrdruf and Hadamar – Shown at the Nuremberg Trials [4K Colourised]
I have received this message from Matt Mason– DL.
<<< I wanted to share our first completed reel of restored and colourised Holocaust footage in 4K. We still have five reels left to complete. One of the surprising things we discovered was the presence of Black American soldiers alongside white American troops — at a time when segregation still existed in the US Army. While it is possible to spot them in the original footage if you know where to look, the colour brings it out and makes it instantly visible.
<<< GRAPHIC CONTENT WARNING:
Some scenes show the dead. I understand not everyone may wish to see that.
<<< However, as Elie Wiesel said:
“For the survivor who chooses to testify, it is clear: his duty is to bear witness for the dead and for the living. He has no right to deprive future generations of a past that belongs to our collective memory. To forget would be not only dangerous but offensive; to forget the dead would be akin to killing them a second time.”
<<< By witnessing this footage, we honour those who were murdered. Every one of them had a name, a mother, a father. In seeing what was done to them, we help give back the humanity the Nazis tried to strip away.
<<< Why this matters:
The act of witnessing is not passive. It is a moral and historical responsibility. Without people actively choosing to look, to remember, and to carry these images forward, the truth becomes vulnerable to distortion, denial, or erasure. Film allows us to confront what words can only describe. Colourisation, in particular, removes the sense of distance that black-and-white images can create — reminding us that these were real people, in the real world, not figures from some detached past.
<<< As the last survivors pass away, the burden of memory shifts to all of us. By watching, we help ensure their voices are not silenced — and that those who deny what happened find their lies exposed by undeniable evidence.
<<< Keep the audio on. The narration is worth hearing. >>>
