Keely Smith and Louis Prima did it: the first time I ever heard "That Old Black Magic" was in a movie theater (the Loews) on 207th Street in a short between two feature films, probably horror movies or such. Louis Prima was a wild man, all over the place, Keely Smith was the straight girl with the fine alto voice and a southern accent. Keely did a terrific all-Sinatra album. She did a couple of magical quartets with FS in the late 1950s on Capitol — for example,"Nothing in Common", which concludes "We've got nothing on common at all" followed by Frank asking for "separate checks").
The black-and-white Primavera vesion of "That Old Black Magic" was followed, I believe, by a slightly out-of-date newsreel. It was around the time Joe Brown defeated Johnny Busso retaining the lightweight championship, which dates it to November 1958. I recall this specifically because the guys next to us said it in Pig Latin ("O-J Rownbay eatbay Ohnny J Ussobay") not realizing that I knew Pig Latin. Why this situation came about is unclear. I was ten years old. — DL
