Music Lessons (Joseph P. Kahn interviews David Lehman for the Boston Globe)

The poet and author of “A Fine Romance: Jewish Songwriters, American Songs’’ leads the Boston Musical Theater troupe in a Great American Songbook celebration tonight at the Paramount Theatre.

Q. What will you be doing onstage?

A. The show has four vocalists and three instrumentalists. I tell stories and impart information about the Songbook, about who these composers and lyricists were. It’s really an entertainment with a lecture attached.

Q. The Gershwins, Irving Berlin, Harold Arlen, Jerome Kern, Dorothy Fields, Richard Rodgers, and Oscar Hammerstein: How do you select your playlist?

A. It changes every time we do a show. There are so many wonderful songwriters, there’s no way to do justice to them all.
