This week, the talking heads of England, France, and Canada announced that they will soon recognize a non-existent entity ("Palestine," the name of the British mandate that existed from 1920 to 1948) as a state.
That's what it means to live in the realm of theory. The actual state is reduced to a nebulous idea, and an idea without borders is elevated into – into what? Something reognized by politicians who haven't the power to do anything but make gestures to disaffected parts of their electrorates.
As my late Marxist friend said, when I asked whether the Soviet experence had dampened his enthusiasm, "Oh, they didn't really try it there."
