On A. R. Ammons’s Birthday: Two Poems in his manner by Atoosa Grey

Merging

From behind the creek’s
left eye
I said
what is that noise
crackling

The creek replied
That is the sound
of my lips
clapping

I splashed
my leafy hands
in the water
to stir laughter into
the creek’s voice

Twin

I chased the Sun to tell it there was a hole in it

But that starless Hole pointed to a shadow in me that held the Sun captive.
