Day Four of Five Days of Sestinas by Florence Cassen Mayers: “A Sestina”

A Sestina

must
be 39 lines long,
lean,
fast.
Blended
words

are OK, but the words
must
be splendid
whether short or long.
Ride fast,
lean

forward, lean
hard on every word,
hold fast
to this mustang
as long
as you can, the endeavor

depends
on muscular, lean
concise or elongated
rambunctious words.
They must
run fast,

as fast
as possible. Incendiary,
volatile or musty,
fat or lean,
the exceptional word
belongs.

If you long
to race the fastest
horse use brilliant words:
lavender, calendula, rhododendron,
cerulean, oleander.
Twirl your mustache:

erelong an ending
fastidious, lean.
Worthy words are a must.
